London Symphony Orchestra : Mendelssohn & Schumann

The London Symphony Orchestra joins renowned conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner to perform two of Mendelssohn’s most important works, as well as Schumann’s piano concerto, interpreted by one of the best loved pianists today, Maria Joao Pires. Schumann’s work, derived from his « Fantasy » in A minor, was composed in 1841. The composer would add two more movements four years later,, when it was first performed in 1845 by his wife, Clara Schumann. This work shows a deliberate departure from the virtuoso concerto, and Schumann returns to the classic concerto form developped by the Viennese – an adventure that plays out between soloist and orchestra.
