Spellbound by his experience of Africa, Olivier Dubois invites us on an animistic journey where bodies dialogue with the cosmos to a slow rhythm. In Souls, a piece for seven African dancers heavy with mysticism, he explores each person’s ability to change his or her fate and, by doing so, even that of the world.
“Throw the dice a second time… Imagine that we six million human beings all decided to simultaneously take a step in the opposite direction to the Earth’s rotation… would we not bring the world order, fate into question and would we not be playing gods by doing so!”
Those are the matters that Olivier Dubois ponders in relation to his creation. He explores the question of fate, which is in our hands. Our ability to put it at stake and ultimately to question the fate of the world. In this new piece, Olivier Dubois employs a slowing down of tempo as a crushing of gravity. The desire for a slow rhythm. Transport of body and soul…
Olivier Dubois founded his company in 2006 following the success of the solo Pour tout l’or du monde [For all the money/gold in the world]. A year later he was rewarded by the professional critics union for his career achievements and in 2011 he was rated among the world’s 25 best dancers.
Since January 1 2014 he has been director of the national choreographic center at Roubaix in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
